R.
BUCKMINSTER FULLER:
THE HISTORY (and Mystery) OF THE UNIVERSE
RETURNS OCT. 16 AT PROJECT ARTAUD THEATER
BUCKY'S BACK!
For tickets call 415/626-DOME
San Francisco,
August 23, 2002-R. Buckminster Fuller: THE HISTORY (and Mystery)
OF THE UNIVERSE, the exuberant one-man play based on the life
and writings of the visionary thinker-inventor-philosopher Buckminster
Fuller, makes a triumphant return to San Francisco at Project
Artaud Theater, 450 Florida St. Low-price previews begin Oct.
16-19, with an official opening on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. The
production became the must see theatrical hit of San Francisco
in 2000, and went on to enjoy critically acclaimed presentations
in Chicago and Seattle.
Written and
directed by D. W. Jacobs, and starring Ron Campbell, who reprises
his highly acclaimed role, the play depicts Buckminster Fuller,
affectionately called Bucky by his friends and family, as the
genius he was, and whose life exemplified American enginuity.
"If the
success or failure of this planet and of human beings depended
on how I am and what I do, how would I be? What would I do?"
were Fuller's driving questions. Today his intellectual quest
may be more vital than ever. Best known as the architect of the
geodesic dome, he was above all an original and independent thinker,
now regarded as way ahead of his time. Refusing to think in conventional
ways, he was an innovator, a futurist, and one of the first true
contemporary global philosophers.
Critics have been unanimous in their praise for this production.
The Chicago Sun Times proclaimed the production as "Magnificent!
Fervent, funny, heart-wrenchingly poignant, and impeccably detailed
- A tour de force!" The Los Angeles Times wrote: "physical,
metaphysical, intellectual, eclectic, challenging and hugely entertaining!"
In San Francisco, the Chronicle enthused: "Ron Campbell gives
a generous, expertly timed and lively performance as the renowned
engineer and philosopher, with none of the self-indulgence often
found in other one-man shows," and the San Francisco Examiner
described it as "Startlingly funny, intellectually stimulating,
and genuinely moving!"
R. Buckminster
Fuller: THE HISTORY (and Mystery) OF THE UNIVERSE is produced
and presented by Foghouse.com in association with ODAAT Productions.
The play premiered in March,
2000, at the San Diego Repertory Theatre, and the Foghouse.com
production opened in
San Francisco in July at the Lorraine Hansberry Theater where
an eight-week sell-out was followed by a second highly successful
run at the George Coates Performance Works.
"We are
particularly delighted to bring this play back to the Bay Area
at this time," stated producer Jeff Rowlings. "Bucky's
passion for humanity and his timeless idealism serve as continuing
inspiration."
Project Artaud
Theater is located at 450 Florida Street, in an eighty year-old
building, which is one of the oldest non-profit member owned and
operated arts complexes in the country. Purchased in 1971 by a
group of artists and performers, it was transformed into an innovative
live/work space. Project Artaud founded the theater, which later
became a separate entity. In the wake of the recent financial
demise of Theater Artaud Inc., Project Artaud members once again
have resumed stewardship of the space. "We are truly delighted
to have Foghouse come in with this fabulous production,"
stated Dina Ciraulo of Project Artaud. "It will give us the
much needed planning time as we envision a vital sustainable future
for the theater."
On Wednesday,
Oct. 9, Foghouse will raise a geodesic dome, 26' in diameter and
18' high, in the Project Artaud Theater lobby. The dome is provided
by Berkeley-based Timberline Geodesic, a leading manufacturer
and designer of geodesic domes used for housing and commercial
applications countrywide. Books, toys, videos, and educational
material will be available in the dome's interior, staffed by
personnel from the Buckminster Fuller Institute (BFI), a nonprofit
organization committed to a sustainable future, and GENI: Global
Energy Network Institute, a non-profit educational organization
which seeks to accelerate the attainment of optimal, ecologically
sustainable energy solutions.
"Bucky Up Close," a series of post show forums, will
follow selected Saturday matinee performances, featuring family,
friends and others inspired by Fuller, and sponsored by BFI. For
more information, visit www.foghouse.com or www.bfi.org.
Low-price
previews (all tickets $20) begin on Wed., Oct. 16 through Sat.,
Oct. 19, with the opening on Sun., Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. Thereafter,
the performance schedule runs Wed.- Sat. at 8 p.m., Sun. at 7
p.m. with matinees on Sat. at 3 p.m. and Sun. at 2 p.m. Ticket

and student rush tickets can be purchased 30 minutes prior to

TWO
CELEBRATED ARTISTS TO EXHIBIT IN
PROJECT ARTAUD THEATER LOBBY DURING
R. BUCKMINSTER FULLER:
THE HISTORY (and Mystery) OF THE UNIVERSE
Buckminster
Fuller Institute To Sponsor Speaker's Series: "Bucky Up Close"
SAN FRANCISCO,
Oct. 11, 2002-Two internationally renowned Bay Area artists, Ruth
Asawa and Wernher Krutein, who were profoundly influenced by the
philosophy of Buckminster Fuller early in their careers, will
be exhibiting works in the Project Artaud Theater lobby when R.
Buckminster Fuller: THE HISTORY (and Mystery) OF THE UNIVERSE,
returns to San Francisco from Oct. 16.
Sculptor Ruth
Asawa's teachers, among them Buckminster Fuller, taught her "that
there is no separation between studying, performing the daily
chores of living, and creating one's own work." She has lived
that philosophy in a career that has combined success as an artist,
a mother, and a driving force in the introduction of art programs
into local schools.
She was introduced
to art as a child in an internment camp during the war, attended
Milwaukee State Teachers College, and went to Black Mountain College
in North Carolina where she studied art with Fuller, Josef Albers,
and Iliya Bolotowsky in a revolutionary approach to art education.
In San Francisco her public commissions include the Mermaid Fountain
at Ghiradelli Square and the Hyatt Fountain at Union Square. She
recently exhibited an acclaimed retrospective entitled "Completing
the Circle" at the Oakland Museum. Her tied-wire and stained
glass sculpture made in collaboration with Bruce Sherman will
hang from the center of the theater lobby's geodesic dome.
Born in Santiago,
Chile, photographer Wernher Krutein trained himself under Buckminster
Fuller and his godfather and namesake Wernher von Braun, the renowned
space scientist. His images have been seen in publications from
TIME and LIFE, to Billboard Magazine and TV Guide. His clients
range from those of Fortune 500 to non-profit organizations such
as Save the Children, UNICEF and End Hunger Network. He was profoundly
affected by a 1984 trip he took through Africa, which reinforced
his view of the camera as a crucial instrument for social change.
Krutein has
taken more than three million photographs all over the world,
and devoted the past fifteen years of his life to the cataloging
and archiving of the best of these images, and those of a diverse
and talented group of photographers. They can be seen at www.photovault.com.
For his exhibit at Project Artaud Theater, he is working with
the Buckminster Fuller Institute to create a display using triangulated
pieces in the dome, and is also creating a 40" x 60"
mosaic on the back wall of the lobby, using 8,000 images which
from a distance will be a portrait of Bucky's face.
BUCKY UP CLOSE
The Buckminster Fuller Institute will again sponsor a free speakers'
series following selected Saturday matinees. The series will feature
Fuller's associates, friends, family and others who have been
inspired by Fuller's life and work. The first in the series will
be offered on Saturday, October 19th at 5:30 p.m. featuring Jaime
Snyder, Fuller's grandson, who will reflect on growing up and
working with Fuller, and founding the Buckminster Fuller Institute.
Other speakers, including D.W. Jacobs, Jay Baldwin (Author of
"BuckyWorks"), and Allegra Fuller-Snyder (Bucky's daughter),
and their dates will be posted on the BFI home page at www.bfi.org
and theFoghouse web site at www.foghouse.com.
